Richard began to study
Russian Character dance at age 14. At 16 he was dancing in an
all Russian dance group. After graduation from the Benesh Institute Of Choreology, he danced with the Metropolitan
Opera Ballet in New York City, eventually becoming a soloist
there. Later he joined the American Ballet Theater,
where he worked with Barishnikov and many other ballet stars.
While in Russia and Poland he notated many Slavic dances as well
as researching their authentic costumes. His inspiration
continues to be Igor Moiseyev and his world famous Russian Dance
Ensemble based in Moscow. Richard was once given the honor of
being Moisevev's assistant during the staging of one of his
dances for the Harkness Ballet in New York City.
Richard "retired" to
Tucson, Arizona in 1987 and since then has been resident
choreographer for the Arizona Opera as well as creating many
ballets for local dance groups and ballet companies nationwide.
He has appeared in several movies, including
"Tombstone" (as Dr. Faust) and was the dance writer
and critic for the Tucson Weekly.
In 1989 Richard started the
Kalinka Russian Dancers to complement the Arizona Balalaika
Orchestra and has choreographed over 40 dances for the group.
Among these are Russian, Ukrainian, Moldavian, Polish, and
Jewish dances. Performances are most often sold out.
